Making a Will

Making a Will is one of the most important things you can do in life to ensure that your wishes will be understood and acted on after death and your friends and family will be looked after. Cavendish Cancer Care recommends everyone consult a legal professional to write a new Will or change an existing one.
A properly written Will ensures that you do not pay unnecessary amounts of tax to the government. Your Solicitor can advise you on how to make charitable donations that will help avoid paying too much tax.
Cavendish Cancer Care recognises that your first priority in making a Will is to look after your family and loved ones.
After you have made provision for your family and loved ones you may decide you wish to leave a donation to Cavendish Cancer Care. There are a number of ways you can do this:

Residuary Bequest

A residuary legacy is when a person leaves a percentage of their estate to a charity. This means that however much your estate is ultimately worth, you ensure your loved ones are looked after as well as giving a gift to your chosen charity. It also means you do not have to keep altering your will as your circumstances change.

Pecuniary Bequest

This is a set sum of money. However, we advise that you consult your solicitor on what is best for your particular circumstances.

Further information on the types of legacy you can leave should be obtained from a qualified solictor

Inheritance Tax

Each individual's tax situation is different, and we always recommend consulting with your solicitor when making any changes to your Will. If the total value of your estate is over £325,000 (the threshold set for the 2011/12tax year), your beneficiaries will have to pay 40% inheritance tax on the amount over £325,000.
Recent reforms now allow married couples and civil partners to combine their tax allowances. This does not raise the inheritance tax threshold to £650,000 but it allows these couples to combine their individual thresholds for the tax year of their death (currently £325,000 for the 2011/12 tax year).
